Debra Joy Hart, aka Daisy the Clown, likes to keep a red clown nose in her purse. She also gives one to almost everyone she meets.She hands them out to people at Disney World and Disneyland and then takes their picture.
"I've given them to hotel managers and to people in restaurants and to our Ireland bus tour guide," she said. "I've given them to doctors and dentists, too. There are some situations where you don't want to use the red nose."
When you do use the nose the concept is "planned spontaneity." Put on the round red nose and see what happens.
Hart has put it on in traffic and watched people let her pass. She once wore it when two nursing-home residents were fighting.
They quit arguing.

Medicinal-herbs class looks at plants in different light

URBANA – Catherine Novak believes in the power of herbs – and not just because they're tasty.
In her herbal medicine chest classes – taught at Novak's store, Beads N Botanicals, in Urbana – the Hoopeston woman teaches students how to look at the plants for healing and health properties as well.
Like peppermint for a stomach ache: "If your stomach ache is from being gassy, a nice cup of peppermint tea may settle your stomach," Novak said. "Take one teaspoon of dried peppermint, pour about eight ounces of boiling water over it and let it steep about 15 minutes. Strain, then drink."
Or basil and garlic for immune support: "Traditional Italian pesto sauce, using lots of fresh basil, garlic, olive oil and pine nuts (or sunflower seeds or pecans) ground together and mixed in with pasta makes a good immune system support, as well as being extremely tasty," she said.

Urbana store offers beads, classes and alternative medicine
Catherine Novak can identify at least 10 medicinal or edible plants within a block-and-a-half walk from her shop in downtown Urbana.
Novak opened her shop, Beads N Botanicals, 117 N. Broadway Ave., partly to share this knowledge with others, as well as to educate people about alternative forms of medicine.
"It gives people a sense of resources that they have in their own backyard that you don't even think about," Novak said. "A lot of people call plants 'weeds' that are actually very good medicinal and edible plants."

mystical readings

CHAMPAIGN — The biggest obstacle for people who might want to move forward
in life is that they don't give themselves enough options.
That's where Catherine Novak comes in.
She reads tarot cards, among other things. She has used the tarot
seriously as a counseling tool for the past 20 or so years but began
reading them earlier, when she was in high school in New Jersey.
"I just present information and try to do it as honestly as I can with
what I see in the cards," she said. "I don't always tell people what
they want to hear but what might be coming up."
